In general, in many cultures the star stands as a symbol of divine presence; of eternity; a bright spot in the darkness, both in the search for ourselves and in difficult times. In addition, the star also represents ambition and hope, think e.g. of the statement…… “reach for the stars” “time to shine.”  Another meaning attributed to the star is one taken up into heaven by those who have died.

5Stars have symbolic meaning in different traditions and cultures. For example, the shining “morning star” symbolizes Crist and the countless stars are descendants of Abraham for Judaism.

The pole star is considered the hinge of the universe and the gateway to heaven. In particular, it is considered a symbol of eternity; hence Hindus make use of this symbol in their wedding celebrations.

With the Chinese, the star, along with the sun and moon, symbolizes the wisdom of the sovereign.

Among Christians, it is a finger of God; think of the star of Bethlehem that pointed out to the wise men from the East where Christ was born.

Mary too is often symbolically compared to a star: ‘Star of the Sea’: a safe beacon for all who are in danger or have lost their direction.

Twelve stars represent the twelve tribes of Israel, or the twelve apostles. Many saints have the star as their hallmark.

To the Maoris, the star signifies the victory of good over evil.

There are also different types of stars, each with its own symbolic meaning….

The 5 Pointed Star: The five points are associated with the five elements of nature: 14air, water, fire, earth and the soul. There is harmony when these are in balance. The star is also used as protection against evil.This is interesting considering that the pentagram is also associated with the devil. In this case, however, the star is upside down, has continuous lines and a circle around it

A hexagram is a star with six points and is often associated with Judaism (Star of David). Originally, the six points represent the six days on which God created the earth, and the center of the star represents the day of rest (in Judaism, the Sabbath).17 Unfortunately, the star has gained a negative image thanks to World War II, because all Jews were required to wear this star visibly.

However, there is also positive symbolism behind it. The two triangles that make up the star represent the interaction between the divine and the human. It can be used for divine protection and/or guidance.

Finally, a shooting star……This is known to make dreams and wishes come true.

Daarnaast staat de ster ook voor ambitie en hoop, denk b.v. aan de uitspraak…… “reach for the stars” “time to shine”.  Een andere betekenis die aan de ster word toegekend is een in de hemel opgenomen gestorvenen.

5Sterren hebben in verschillende tradities en culturen een symbolische betekenis. De blinkende ‘morgenster’ staat bijvoorbeeld als symbool voor Cristus en de ontelbare sterren zijn voor het jodendom nakomelingen van Abraham.

De poolster wordt beschouwd als scharnier van het heelal en als poort van de hemel. Hij geldt met name als zinnebeeld voor de eeuwigheid; vandaar dat Hindoes van dit symbool gebruik maken bij hun bruiloftsfeesten.

Bij de Chinezen is de ster tezamen met de zon en de maan het symbool voor de wijsheid van de vorst.

Bij de christenen is hij een vingerwijzing Gods; denk aan de ster van Bethlehem die aan de wijzen uit het Oosten wees waar Christus was geboren.

Ook Maria wordt vaak symbolisch vergeleken met een ster: ‘Sterre der Zee’: een veilig baken voor allen die gevaar lopen of de goede richting zijn kwijtgeraakt.

Twaalf sterren staan voor de twaalf stammen van Israël, of voor de twaalf apostelen. Vele heiligen hebben de ster als kenmerk.

Voor de Maori’s betekent de ster de overwinning van het goede op het kwaad.

Ook zijn er ook verschillende soorten sterren, met elk een eigen symbolische betekenis..

De 5 puntige Ster: De vijf punten worden geassocieerd met de vijf elementen van de natuur: 14lucht, water, vuur, aarde en de ziel. Er is harmonie wanneer deze in balans zijn. De ster wordt ook gebruikt als bescherming tegen het kwaad.Dit is interessant als je bedenkt dat het pentagram ook geassocieerd wordt met de duivel. In dit geval staat de ster echter op zijn kop, heeft doorlopende lijnen en er staat een cirkel omheen

Een hexagram is een ster met zes punten en wordt vaak geassocieerd met het Jodendom (Davidster). Van oorsprong staan de zes punten voor de zes dagen waarop God de aarde heeft gecreëerd, en het midden van de ster voor de rustdag (in het Jodendom de Sabbat).17 De ster heeft helaas een negatief beeld gekregen dankzij de tweede wereldoorlog, omdat alle Joden deze ster zichtbaar moesten dragen.

Er zit echter ook een positieve symboliek achter. De twee driehoeken waaruit de ster is opgebouwd staan voor de interactie tussen het goddelijke en het menselijke. Het kan gebruikt worden voor goddelijke bescherming en / of begeleiding.

Tenslotte een vallende ster……Deze staat erom bekend dat ze dromen en wensen doen uitkomen.
